In May 2024, the biennial chamber music festival Schlern Music once again invites its audience to experience works from different eras at unconventional, atmospheric venues in and around Völs am Schlern - fresh, exciting impulses are contributed by the new artistic direction: flautist Chiara Tonelli and the conductor and cellist Philipp von Steinaecker. Perfectly matching the spirit of the festival, they also represent a bridge between Völs am Schlern and the international classical music world. Here, where the two have lived for over 20 years, they will welcome outstanding musicians from their large artistic network around the renowned Mahler Chamber Orchestra.

Musicians and programs draw their spontaneity and freshness from the pure joy of making music outside a set professional routine. Another important feature of the festival are its ambition to enable encounters between artists and audience and the carefully selected "stages" including individual culinary accents. Völs am Schlern with its many farmers, restaurants and winegrowers provides the perfect setting for this approach of combining locally grown and produced culinary delights with repertoire interpreted by the a charismatic group of internationally acclaimed artists.

Schlern Music 2022

Chamber music has a long tradition in Völs, most recently by the introduction of a fresh, contemporary festival concept in collaboration with the legendary string quartet agent Sonia Simmenauer. The format with young string quartets and instrumentalists enjoyed extraordinary popularity and is now being sharpened even further with the artistic direction of Tonelli and von Steinaecker. Entry to all concerts is free, encouraging an easy, unpretentious access to the sublime world of chamber music at its highest level.

The major news is the newly appointed artistic direction by Chiara Tonelli and Philipp von Steinaecker, who are taking over from the energetic team around legendary concert agent Sonia Simmenauer, who curated the memorable first three editions of the festival. Chiara Tonelli, who was born in Bozen, and Philipp von Steinaecker, who hails from Hamburg, already know each other from their time with the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, then still under the direction of its founder Claudio Abbado. Both are founding members of renowned Mahler Chamber Orchestra, which was also inspired by Abbado.

THE FESTIVAL

Philipp von Steinaecker, who originally trained as a cellist at the New York Juilliard School, has set his focus on conducting for many years, being primarily influenced by Sir John Eliot Gardiner in the Orchester Révolutionaire et Romantique and by Claudio Abbado and also as Abbado's assistant and as Guest conductor in whose orchestra Mozart worked. He has been the artistic curator of the Gustav Mahler Academy Bozen for 10 years, with whose orchestra he led a remarkable performance of Mahler's 9th Symphony on original instruments last year.

Tonelli and von Steinaecker have been living in Prösels for over 20 years and not only spend the time here between their numerous touring and concert engagements - for many years they also organized a chamber music festival with musician friends, an idea that born during their wedding at Schloss Prösels, which was blessed with many musical contributions in the wonderful acoustics of the inner courtyard. With the increasing involvement in other projects and the birth of their daughter, they stopped the chamber music week a few years ago. After repeatedly being asked about it by musician friends and colleagues they gladly accepted their new assignment in the Schlern Music chamber music festival, which was relaunched in its current form a few years ago.

THE MUSICIANS

The list of great musicians who are embarking on this adventurous trip underlines the serious artistic ambitions of the project: the world-famous Swedish soprano Camilla Tilling, the outstanding young violinists Andrea Obiso, concertmaster of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome and Afanasy Chupin, Theodor Currentzi's unforgettable concertmaster at MusicAeterna, the Israeli violinist Nitzan Bartana, concertmaster in the Basel Symphony Orchestra and internationally sought-after as a chamber musician, the violist Volker Jacobsen, founding member of the legendary Artemis Quartet, Nicola Birkhan, principal violinist in the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra , here on the viola, as well as the charismatic cello star Maximilian Hornung, and the wonderful chamber musician and accompanist Paul Rivinius as well as the double bass player Roberto di Ronza, a Neapolitan living in Salzburg and a sought-after chamber musician, as well as solo bassist of the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Philharmonic.

They will be joined by selected young talents, such as the violinist Jacob Kammerlander, Bolzano-born horn player Alessio Dainese, who despite his youth is already the principal horn at the Maggio Musicale in Florence, and the flautist Petra Lantschner from Völs, who has just been admitted to the Academy of the Vienna Philharmonic. Of course, the artistic directors themselves will also participate: Chiara Tonelli, former principal flautist with the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and now principal flutist with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and her husband Philipp von Steinaecker, conductor and cellist in the Mahler Chamber Orchestra. In keeping with the spirit of the festival, they also represent a bridge between Völs am Schlern and the international classical music world.

The program for Schlern Music 2024 is by design highly eclectic and varied. There is no theme as such but there are a few thoughts that structure the many concerts on offer.

THE VENUES

A festival that even the participating artists might not forget about soon: Instead of the usual well-lit stages, concerts will be taking place in hay barns, chapels, wineries, castles and all this surrounded by a landscape, which couldn’t be any more different to the cultural metropolises of the continent. The setting is informal, audience and music are unusually close to each other. Everything is slightly smaller here, except for the impressive mountain ranges of the Dolomites around Völs am Schlern.
