50 years Nature park Schlern-Rosengarten

The Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park was founded in 1974, making it the oldest nature park in South Tyrol. The park, together with the regional conservation area of the Seiser Alm, forms a single natural landscape. Covering an area of over 7,288 hectares, the nature park in the western Dolomites provides insight into a fascinating habitat with scenic beauty, geomorphological and geological significance and unique flora and fauna with around 790 flowers and fern plants. The Schlern massif, with the rocky tower of the Santner and the Euringer, is the emblem mountain of South Tyrol. The Schlern, together with the Rosengarten massif with its countless towers, are famed far beyond the borders of the Dolomites. And on the legendary mountain of the Rosengarten, the “Enrosadira” can be seen in all its majesty at sunset, when the Dolomites glow pink under the rays of the evening sun.

The "Kuchlkastl" Culinary Festival in Völs am Schlern is a secret tip among gourmets and friends of "down home" cooking, alike. Since 1978, the inkeepers and restaurant owners in Völs have been inviting visitors to partake in the "Gastronomical October".

At the close of the season, the best chef cooks of Völs will do their utmost to astonish and enchant you with new variations of traditional dishes - dishes prepared with passion and enjoyed with fine appreciation. If you are in search of original dishes, based on time-honored recipes, but with a modern accent, you ought not to miss this month-long culinary festival in Völs am Schlern.

Transhumance in October

Back home, this is the ideal reference for livestock, including cows, sheep and goats after a summer spent on the Seiser Alm returning to their stables. Accompanied by bells and wreaths the animals inhabit the area from Compatsch to Kastelruth. The transhumance festivity takes place at Compatsch and afterwards in the village square of Kastelruth. Refreshments accompanied by local folk-music avaites you.

Even in Völs am Schlern you can enjoy the tradition of transhumance. At the beginning of October the cattle returns from the Malga Tuff to the valley. The herd’s blessing takes place at around 12 a.m in Völs am Schlern.
