THE TRANSHUMANCE AT CASTELROTTO
comes round, it`s back to the valley for the 250 cattle, horses, goats and sheep that spent the summer months grazing on the Seiser Alm
The „Almabtrieb“ transhumance procession is traditionally celebrated on „Rosary Saturday“, the day before the harvest feast. This year the event will tanke place on the 5th of October. The cattle, covered in wreaths and chiming cowbells, are herded along the roads from the Seiser Alm all the way down to the valley. Accompanied by bells and wreaths the animals fill the area of Compaccio at 10am. The transhumance is accompanied by a feast and a famers' and artisans' market are part of this special event, as well.
The colourful drove arrives at Castelrotto at approx. 1 p.m. There the event is celebrated with typical dishes, drinks and musical entertainment with the local band of Castelrotto. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ THE TRANSHUMANCE AT FIÈ ALLO SCILIAR
In Fiè allo Sciliar
you can enjoy the tradition of transhumance, too.
A select circle of over 300 four-legged itinerants who are driven from Fiè, Aica di Fiè and Umes over the picturesque Sentiero dei tronchi path (variously known as the Knüppelweg ) to the ancestral high pasture lands on the Sciliar in Summer. In autumn the cattle are driven to the Tuff Alm mountain hut.
On 29 September 2019
the cattle return from the Tuff Alm mountain hut. The herd of about 120 cattle starts at 10.00 a.m. and moves into the village centre about an hour later. The herd’s blessing takes place at 12 a.m. in Fiè allo Sciliar, where the feast continues with traditional live music and South Tyrolean dishes.
