Seiser Alm Nature: Transhumance 🐄
When the late summer days begin to draw in and the first frost shimmers on the meadows, the time has come for the farmers to bring their cows down from the lush alpine meadows of the Seiser Alm and back to their winter byres in the valleys. 😀 Brightly coloured ribbons, bells and garlands bedeck the cow’s heads and necks, in a magnificence of festoonery which is both beautiful to see and infused with a deep symbolic significance: It is a mark of gratitude for an accident-free summer on the mountain pastures. 🐮 During the descent, the farmers and their families lead the cattle down the mountains. Once they get to the valley, the animals are greeted with the warmest of welcomes, and a party of traditional South Tyrolean specialities, music and dancing commences. 🎶
