Off to Törggelen in South Tyrol!

A beloved culinary tradition: the classic autumn Törggelen

Törggelen in South Tyrol is an old custom originally celebrated at the end of the grape harvest. Today, Törggelen is often combined with an autumn hike, followed by a stop in a traditional farmhouse inn, farm tavern, or rustic cellar to enjoy a meal together: barley or pumpkin cream soup, Schlutzkrapfen, speck, smoked sausages, cheese, Schüttelbrot, dumplings, and a hearty Schlachtplatte with homemade sausages and cured meat. The crowning finale of every Törggelen feast: roasted chestnuts and sweet doughnuts.

In the villages of Kastelruth, Seis am Schlern, Völs am Schlern, and Tiers am Rosengarten, you will find many places offering Törggelen. Particularly well known are the hamlets of St. Oswald and St. Vigil above Kastelruth, as well as the area around Völs am Schlern – especially Völser Aicha. Families and friends often begin with a scenic autumn hike – for example on the Oachner Höfeweg – and then enjoy a convivial meal together. They taste Sußer, the young wine of the season, chat away, and appreciate the time spent together.

The Oachner Höfeweg

The Oachner Höfeweg is a hiking trail near Völs am Schlern, starting at Castle Prösels. It leads through diverse natural landscapes and past old farms, traditional taverns, vineyards, and chestnut groves. In autumn, when the leaves glow in shades of yellow, orange, and red, this circular hike is especially beautiful.
