Respect the mountain

For greater environmental protection & respect for nature

In the Dolomites Region Seiser Alm, we place great importance on treating nature with care and ensuring its long-term protection. With the “Respect the mountain” initiative, we want to raise awareness among all those who live in or visit our region – encouraging environmentally friendly behaviour both in everyday life and out in the mountains, along with mindful and respectful conduct in this sensitive natural environment. Our key topics? Drinking water and waste reduction.

Drinking water from the Dolomites Region Seiser Alm

Our spring water is pure, fresh and of the highest quality. Having constant access to it is a privilege – and one we must protect by using drinking water responsibly and avoiding unnecessary consumption.

    • From nature
There are more than 2,000 drinking water sources, all regularly tested.
    • Environmentally friendly
Drinking tap water avoids packaging waste and transport routes.
    • A limited resource
Using water sparingly is essential to prevent waste.
    • Health benefits
The human body needs at least 1.5 litres of water per day.

    Drink tap water
South Tyrolean tap water is excellent drinking water. You can safely refill your bottle at the tap or at any marked drinking fountain.
Every disposable bottle creates waste. By using a reusable bottle, you help us combat the global plastic waste problem. That is why we kindly ask you: avoid plastic bottles whenever possible and drink our fresh tap water – not only during your holiday.
You can also purchase our high-quality, sustainable stainless-steel bottle at the tourist offices and at Südtirol Products.

    Human needs while hiking

If you need to go to the toilet while hiking, please follow these guidelines:

    • Use public toilets whenever available.
    • Use toilet paper instead of tissues – it decomposes much faster.
    • Even better: take your used toilet paper with you in a small bag and dispose of it in the next bin.
    • Go far away from water sources such as streams, lakes and ponds.

    • Provisions made from regional and seasonal produce
They are excellent for keeping your energy levels up, support local economic cycles and reduce environmental impact due to short transport routes.
    • Reusable food container
It holds your provisions and later your waste. Whatever you take into the mountains must go back down with you and be disposed of correctly. You can also purchase our high-quality, sustainable stainless-steel food container at the tourist offices.
    • Enough water in reusable bottles
You can refill your bottle at drinking fountains, reducing plastic waste.
    • Toilet paper for emergency needs
Toilet paper decomposes in 2–4 weeks; tissues take up to 5 years.
    • No unnecessary weight
Mountain huts and alpine pastures provide everything you may need.
Drinking fountains
Use your personal bottle and refill it easily at our designated drinking water fountains with fresh, top-quality water.
Less waste, more nature

Waste reduction in the Dolomites Region Seiser Alm

Waste decomposes much more slowly in the mountains – some items not at all. It can also injure animals and people. The best solution is to leave no waste behind in this fragile environment.
4 tips for a cleaner environment:

  • I never leave anything behind in nature.
  • I only pack what I truly need.
  • What I take up the mountain, I take back down again.
  • I separate and dispose of waste properly once I’m at home.

Dog toilet stations in the Dolomites Region Seiser Alm
When dogs need to go
Throughout the Dolomites Region Seiser Alm you will find numerous dog waste stations with free dog waste bags. Carrying such bags is mandatory. Please dispose of them in the bin provided at each station – never in nature.
Important: Only dog waste may be placed in these bins; general household waste is not permitted. Dog faeces must not be left on meadows under any circumstances. If it ends up in animal feed, cows may suffer miscarriages.

    Events & initiatives on sustainability

Throughout the year, we organise events and awareness-raising activities for locals and visitors alike. These initiatives highlight key sustainability topics and offer valuable insights into our project and the protected natural environment of the Dolomites Region Seiser Alm.Sustainable experiences are events that are planned, organized, and implemented according to sustainability criteria. The key factors here are the use of environmentally friendly products, energy efficiency, environmentally friendly mobility, waste management, regional value creation, and social responsibility.

What to do if you find a fossil

If you find a fossil or a stone and are unsure whether it may be of scientific or palaeontological interest, please proceed as follows:

    • Note down the finder’s personal details.
    • Keep the object or take a photograph (important: place an item next to it for scale, e.g. a coin).
    • Send the photo to the palaeontology specialist of the Province of Bozen.
    • If the evaluation shows that the item is not of scientific interest, the finder may in principle keep it, while recognising that legal ownership remains with the State or the Autonomous Province of Bozen–South Tyrol.
