Venetian saw mill "Steger Säge"
Museums and exhibitions
At the entrance to the Tschamin Valley you will find the information point of the Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park, located in the historic “Steger Säge”, a rare water-powered Venetian sawmill.
Until 2021, the building served as the Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park Visitor Center and was the oldest nature park center in South Tyrol. In recent years, it has been carefully restored, the sawmill was brought back into operation, and the site was opened to visitors.
However, a severe storm in 2024 caused significant damage to the facility, and the sawmill is currently not operational. Restoration works are already being planned, with reopening expected in the near future.
Inside, visitors can experience an authentic insight into traditional alpine craftsmanship and everyday life: the original sawmill and the reconstructed living quarters tell the story of past life and work in the mountains. In addition, the exhibition provides fascinating information about the flora and fauna of the Schlern-Rosengarten Nature Park, offering a deeper understanding of this unique landscape and its wildlife.
