Chamber Music beneath the Schlern

In even-numbered years, the chamber-music festival Schlern Music takes place in and around Völs am Schlern. At truly special venues, musicians perform in various ensembles, presenting works from different eras. Under the artistic direction of flautist Chiara Tonelli and conductor and cellist Philipp von Steinaecker, the international music world gathers in Völs am Schlern. Spontaneity and music-making beyond professional routine are just as central to the festival as interaction with the audience and an accessible, non-academic approach to music education.

Schlern Music with new impulses

Every two years in May, Schlern Music transforms Völs am Schlern into the setting for an extraordinary week of chamber music amid the lush green mountain meadows. Since 2024, under the artistic direction of the local flutist Chiara Tonelli and conductor/cellist Philipp von Steinaecker, Schlern Music invites outstanding figures from the European music scene to a concentrated series of musical encounters in unconventional and atmospheric concert venues.

The 2026 Program

Schlern Music deliberately focuses on less frequently performed chamber music: on the program are, among others, two string quintets by Mozart, Brahms’ two sextets, as well as Schubert’s Trout Quintet and Franz Schmidt’s piano quintet for the left hand at the closing concert. This year, a special emphasis is placed on the oboe, featuring works by Mozart, Britten, Moscheles, and an arrangement of the Tristan prelude. The program is complemented by significant modern works by Schmidt, Britten, Penderecki, and Veress.

Established artists meet young talents

The 2026 lineup of musicians includes, in addition to Tonelli and von Steinaecker, distinguished chamber music legends such as Veronika Hagen (Hagen Quartet) and Volker Jacobsen (founding member of the Artemis Quartet), as well as members of leading European orchestras, including Andrea Obiso (concertmaster of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia), Martin Zalodek (1st violin section of the Vienna Philharmonic), Olivier Doise (principal oboist of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France), Nanni Malm and Paolo Bonomini (both of Camerata Salzburg), and Roberto Di Ronza. Younger talents such as Aylen Pritchin and Noga Shaham are also featured. Pianist and surgeon Sebastian Debus will perform at the closing concert.

The concert venues

Established venues such as Edelansitz Zimmerlehen (Opening, May 13, 9:00 PM), Stanglerhof (May 14, 9:00 PM), and Schloss Prösels (Closing Concert, May 17, 11:00 AM) will host performances, complemented by new locations: for the first time, concerts will take place in the former barn of Hotel Gfell / Schönblick (May 16, 12:00 PM) and in the hall of the Koholz carpentry in St. Anton (May 16, 9:00 PM). A moderated artist discussion at Hotel Heubad (May 15, 9:00 PM) will deepen the dialogue between the musicians. For children aged 8 to 12, a concert will be held on May 15 at the Völs Library.
